Colon Cancer Awareness Program by Lone Star Aviary Club

On August 22, 2025, the Lone Star Aviary Club, a proud chapter of the Aviary Club of Nigeria, held a landmark program focused on Colon Cancer Awareness. The event was designed to sensitize the general public, particularly men, on the importance of routine medical checks and preventive screenings such as colonoscopy.

Colon cancer has become one of the most prevalent and preventable forms of cancer worldwide. Yet, due to stigma, negligence, and lack of awareness, many men ignore early symptoms or delay necessary tests. The Lone Star Aviary Club sought to break this cycle through a combination of education, advocacy, and community outreach.

The program consisted of two major sessions,a morning community service event and an evening awareness walk. Together, these sessions successfully combined humanitarian support with health advocacy, reflecting the true Aviary spirit of service, compassion, and leadership.

Morning Session: Food Distribution and Health Awareness

The first session was held in the morning, in collaboration with the Tarantula County Food Palm Tree initiative. This partnership brought together city officials, community leaders, and volunteers of the Aviary Club in a collective effort to address both hunger and health awareness.

Feeding 235 Families

In a touching display of solidarity, the Lone Star Aviary Club helped distribute food to 235 families in need. Each family left not only with essential supplies but also with vital knowledge about the importance of early detection of colon cancer.

During the program, club officials reminded participants that colon cancer is treatable if discovered early, and that assistance is available for those who cannot afford a colonoscopy. Attendees were encouraged to reach out to agencies, local hospitals, and organizations like the Lone Star Aviary Club for support.

Dignitaries Present

The morning session was honored by the presence of:

  • The Vice President of the North America Provincial Council of the Aviary Club, Avian Yemi Amele

  • Former Treasurer of the North America Provincial Council, Avian Olayinka Taiwo

    Elder Avian Baba kofo

Both leaders spoke passionately about the Aviary Club’s role in uplifting communities, not only by meeting physical needs but also by advocating for better health practices.

The atmosphere was one of joy, unity, and empowerment, as families departed feeling cared for both physically and emotionally.

Awareness Walk in North Dallas

The second session began later in the evening at the North Dallas District, attracting a vibrant mix of Aviary members, community residents, and passersby who joined in curiosity and support.

Keynote Presentation by Global Secretary

The highlight of the evening was the presence of Sir Avian Dubby Alfonso, Global Secretary of the Aviary Club, who delivered a stirring presentation. His speech emphasized the urgent need for men to:

  • Schedule regular health checkups

  • Take colon cancer screenings seriously

  • Encourage friends, relatives, and peers to do the same

Sir Alfonso reminded attendees that men often neglect their health, focusing instead on family and work responsibilities. He urged them to “take the first step for themselves, so they can continue to be strong pillars for their families.”

20-Minute Awareness Walk

Following the presentation, the club led a 20-minute awareness walk through the district. Members carried banners, waved at passersby, and stationed themselves at traffic intersections. The walk became an engaging street-level campaign, drawing the attention of motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Many curious onlookers stopped to ask questions, take pictures, and collect informational flyers. Conversations sparked during the walk revealed how little awareness some had about colon cancer, and how thankful they were for the Aviary’s efforts.

The walk continued until 8:00 PM, ensuring maximum community engagement and visibility.

Support from Provincial Leaders

Also present was Avian Yinka Adekonola of the North America Provincial Council, who spoke strongly about the responsibility men have to look after their health. He emphasized that “prevention is better than cure” and commended the Lone Star Aviary for leading by example in community-centered advocacy.

Impact of the Event

The dual sessions achieved far-reaching impact on multiple levels:

  1. Health Awareness: Dozens of men pledged to schedule colonoscopy tests or medical checkups within the next month.

  2. Community Support: 235 families received food aid, easing their burden while linking humanitarian aid with health education.

  3. Visibility: Hundreds of passersby witnessed the awareness walk, sparking conversations that will ripple through households across Dallas.

  4. Leadership in Action: The presence of global and provincial Aviary leaders demonstrated unity and commitment to the cause, inspiring members at all levels.

The Aviary Spirit in Action

The Lone Star Aviary Club’s Colon Cancer Awareness Program on August 22, 2025, was a shining example of what the Aviary Club of Nigeria stands for, compassion, service, leadership, and impact.

By combining food distribution with life-saving health education, and pairing inspiring speeches with visible community action, the club ensured that the message of colon cancer awareness reached far and wide.

This initiative has set a benchmark for future Aviary programs worldwide, showing that when service and awareness meet, real change happens.
