Speech from the Global President of the Aviary Club of Nigeria

Delivered by Odia Eromosele on World Migratory Bird Day

My dear brothers of the Aviary Club of Nigeria, fellow Nigerians, and friends of nature across the globe,

On behalf of the Aviary Club of Nigeria, I bring warm greetings and profound appreciation to every Avian, nature enthusiast, conservationist, and bird lover on the occasion of World Migratory Bird Day.

As the world gathers today to recognize and celebrate the beauty, resilience, and journey of migratory birds, we too stand proudly to join this noble cause. This global celebration, established by the United Nations in 2006, is held every second weekend in May. It is a vital effort under the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), reminding us of how birds connect continents, cultures, and communities.

Today, over 118 nations unite under this cause, and the Aviary Club of Nigeria a brotherhood deeply connected to the spirit of birds is honored to be part of that voice.

We are not just a social organization. The Aviary Club is a movement rooted in nature, brotherhood, discipline, and societal transformation. Our very name, "Aviary," signifies a haven for birds, and that symbolism goes beyond words. We are deeply attached to nature and particularly to birds not just in philosophy, but in action.

Call to Action: Protecting Aviculture and Nigeria’s Birdlife

As we mark this important day, I urge every Avian worldwide to celebrate responsibly, reflect deeply, and above all, act. This is a call to preserve bird species, promote aviculture, and protect the rich biodiversity of our environment.

We must take this opportunity to encourage the Federal Government of Nigeria to rise to the occasion and:

  • Promote national awareness on the importance of birds in our ecosystem.

  • Enforce bird preservation policies and protection laws.

  • Establish a national bird zoo or sanctuary dedicated solely to birds, where the public especially children can be educated about the beauty, diversity, and environmental roles of birds.

  • Support bird research, conservation, and tourism, which can also serve as a new source of national pride and economic opportunity.

Birds are not just creatures of the sky they are guardians of ecosystems, carriers of seeds, symbols of peace, and indicators of environmental health. They should be respected, preserved, and treated fairly, both in our forests and in our hearts.

The Role of Every Avian

To all Aviary brothers across provinces, let us lead by example. Let us organize community clean-ups, plant trees, donate bird feeders to schools, visit sanctuaries, and use our platforms to educate others. We must do all we can to protect the skies we claim to soar in.

Let our voices join those of 118 other nations today as we say:

“Birds matter. Their journeys connect us all.”

In Unity We Soar

As we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day, may the spirit of the bird continue to inspire us to rise above challenges, to remain free yet disciplined, and to always return to our core: unity, peace, and brotherhood.

Happy World Migratory Bird Day to all Avians and lovers of nature around the world.

Thank you, and may we continue to soar.

In Unity We Soar.

Signed,
Odia Eromosele
Global President
